Snowbirds must protect themselves from having their claims denied. Recent events have reminded us how an unsuspecting Snowbird can have assets that they’ve worked long and hard to accumulate, depleted by one unfortunate circumstance.

It is critically important that you disclose all of the details of your medical history during the application process.  All medical problems and medications, no matter how insignificant they seem should be mentioned to your broker.  YOUR TRAVEL INSURANCE COVERAGE DEPENDS ON IT!

How can you protect yourself from being on the wrong end of a denied claim? Be an informed consumer!

1. Know the rules of the policy you have purchased.  All policies sold in Canada have rules regarding:

a. Pre-existing and/or currently treated conditions and which of these will be covered. REMEMBER: Everything, even a minor infection, is considered a pre-existing condition to a travel insurance company.

b. The consequences of not disclosing a pre-existing condition on your insurance application.

DIVULGE ALL CONDITIONS, BIG OR SMALL, WHEN PURCHASING YOUR POLICY.  AN OUNCE OF PREVENTION IS WORTH A POUND OF CURE!!!

2. Accurately disclose your pre-existing conditions on the insurance application.  You are required to disclose medical conditions you have, treatments & medications (current and past) and the reason for the treatment..  At the time of claim, insurance companies will review your doctor's file to ensure that you have correctly identified your medical history on your policy.  If you haven't, your claim  can be denied.

IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT TO DISCUSS ANY UNCERTAINTIES YOU HAVE ABOUT YOUR MEDICAL HISTORY WITH YOUR DOCTOR. CONFIRM WHAT IS WRITTEN IN YOUR MEDICAL FILE.    YOU ARE ENTITLED TO INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR PERSONAL MEDICAL HISTORY AND SHOULD REVIEW IT BEFORE THE INSURANCE COMPANY DOES.

3. Arm yourself with the knowledge of what is in your doctor's file before you apply for travel insurance so that you can be sure that you are disclosing everything.  It is critically important to document the information contained in your file so that you get it right when you are applying for travel insurance is critically important.

USE OUR MEDICAL HISTORY TABLE ON THE REVERSE TO DOCUMENT THE ITEMS IN YOUR DOCTOR'S FILE.  KEEP A HISTORY OFALL DETAILS:  DISCUSSIONS WITH THE DOCTOR, DATE AND TIME OF DISCUSSION, STARTING, STOPPING OR CHANGING A MEDICATION, CHANGES TO TREATMENT, REASON FOR TREATMENT, NAMES OF MEDICAL CONDITIONS, AND MORE.

4. Review your Confirmations of Insurance to ensure they accurately reflect the information that you have provided. Read the Policy Wording that has been provided to you.  It is your responsibility to know what is covered and what is not.

DO NOT CONSIDER LEAVING WITHOUT READING THE FINE PRINT ON YOUR TRAVEL INSURANCE POLICY FIRST.  BE AN INFORMED CONSUMER BY KNOWING WHAT YOU HAVE PURCHASED AND THE RULES INCLUDED.  MAKE A LIST OF QUESTIONS THAT YOU HAVE WHILE YOU READ THE POLICY AND CALL US TO GO OVER YOUR QUESTIONS BEFORE YOUR TRIP STARTS.

** THIS IS NOT AN OFFICIAL APPLICATION FORM – THIS IS FOR YOUR OWN RECORD KEEPING AND PEACE OF MIND! **

TO ENSURE YOUR POLICY IS SET UP CORRECTLY, KNOW WHAT IS IN YOUR DOCTOR’S FILE BEFORE REQUESTING A QUOTE AND ESPECIALLY BEFORE DEPARTING ON A TRIP.  ASK YOUR DOCTOR WHAT IS IN YOUR FILE:

Name: _______________________________________________

WHAT is the MEDICAL TERM for your medical condition

WHAT treatment do you take or have you taken recently for this condition?

WHEN did you start this treatment?

WHEN was the last time this treatment changed?  Last dosage increase/decrease/on new meds/off meds etc.

WHY do you take this treatment?
